U.S. Army Special Forces, Chief Warrant Officer, 1986-2007. Served as Commander of Special Forces military Free-Fall (HALO) and Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR) teams. Trained in operations, intelligence, weapons, demolitions, communications, and advanced first-aid:

Josh LevartJosh grew up in the Ozark foothills of southeast Missouri in a family with a long tradition of hunting, fishing, and using what they could from nature. He became an avid hunter and fisherman as soon as his Dad began taking him along with him around the age of six. In his early teens, he became interested in wilderness survival and bushcraft. Some of his other favorite activity’s included reading everything he could about survival and learning from elders with extensive knowledge. This lifestyle continued and grew into Josh’s adult life. In 2015, he began training under Matt Tate and Bj Latta as well as teaching for Integrated Survival Systems.

BJ has been a student of Bushcraft since he was a kid growing up in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains. BJ has traveled the US putting his skills to the test throughout his adult life and has been actively teaching for since 2005. BJ is an avid hunter, trapper and fisherman & outdoorsman.

BJ also stared on Discovery Channels Bushcraft Build-Off – He worked with Discovery Channel in the remote mountains of northern Utah while filming Bushcraft Build-Off. Of the 600+ people who tried out for the competition, BJ was one of the 12 participants selected to lead a team in the competition.

Randy Owen – Jacksonville, FL Associate Instructor

Jacksonville FL Survival InstructorRandy Owen is the Owner of Owen Forge, a blacksmith and bladesmith shop in Callahan, Florida. In 2012, he began practicing blacksmithing and bladesmithing, consuming any and all information he could find on the topic. Randy perfected his craft by reading hundreds of books and articles, watching hundreds of videos, consulting multiple master Smiths from around the world and, most importantly, putting in countless hours of dirt time. His shop, techniques and designs are always being elevated and innovated.  While starting small in a makeshift open air forge, Randy has grown his shop to now having a climate controlled and furnished workshop allowing him to comfortably teach classes and make best-in-class knives.

In addition to making knives, Randy consults with many survival schools and customers on knife designs and materials. He has taught knife making classes since 2016 to students across the U.S.

Randy is also also an avid outdoorsman and has trained with Joel Graves since 2015. His love for primitive skills and outdoor experience began as a child exploring Native American history and skills. He has completed Standard and advanced survival courses from Sigma 3 and practices many primitive skills in his day to day life including primitive hunting and trapping as well as brain tanning those same hides and pelts.

Randy has been a Florida EMT Paramedic since 2013 and has years of experience in emergency medical services. His other accomplishments include being a prior service Marine, ordained minister, short-term missionary to Africa, husband and father of three amazing kids.

Tim Armstrong JacksonvilleTim Armstrong is owner of Eat Your Yard Jax, an edible plant nursery, aquaculture facility and education center on the West side of Jacksonville (and the location of our Jacksonville training). He has spent his lifetime exploring the woods and waterways of North Florida and South Georgia, has a keen respect for nature and loves to share that passion with others.  He also teaches and manages “Berry Good Farms” for North Florida School of Special Education.

He is a graduate of Will Allen’s Commercial Urban Agriculture program 2011 from “Growing Power”. He is a past recipient of Hands on Jacksonville’s “Hands on Earth Award”. His farm has been a training site for “Veterans Farm of Jacksonville” for the past three years. Backyard Aquaponics

In this class we guide you step by step to help you understand how to build and run an aquaculture system to raise fish and vegetables together. In this class we go into detail on the following:

  1. Planning your system – location, climate, light, how to size your system.
  2. Water – Source, Temperature, PH, Oxygen, Methods of moving water.
  3. Fish – How many, fish to plant ratio, what types for your system, sources, feeding, raising your own feed, harvesting.
  4. Plants – What grows best, how to start plants, spacing, and insect control.
  5. Bacteria and worms – What is Bioponic?, Why bacteria is your friend, Care and feeding of your bacteria, Using worms as your friends.
  6. System maintenance – Daily, weekly and monthly maintenance.

In this class we go over several systems on the farm. Also in the class we demonstrate several techniques to fabricate systems that you can do at home to get you growing fish and plants together in your own Aquaponics setup.

Florida Survival InstructorJoel brings an extremely extensive military and tactical background. Completing 355 missions as Naval Special Warfare EOD on Seal Team 2 & 4, which is arguably one of the most elite and highly trained bomb squads in the world. He has served tours in Iraq, Bahrain and Afghanistan, personally disarmed improvised explosive devices with minimal tools in some of the most austere environments in the world. He has provided secret service protection in multiple countries for President Bush, President Obama and VP Biden. Today, Joel leverages his tactical and combat experience to prepare civilians, military personnel and organizations for international and domestic threats. Training and consulting opportunities with Joel include: international traveler, SERE, active shooter preparedness, self defense and organizational security.

Joel’s bushcraft and survival skill set is as equally impressive. Following his retirement from special forces, Joel spent six months in a long-term survival program where he slept in the field for 5 months, living off the land and honing his craft.. Since a very young age, Joel has been hunting and fishing all over the country. He currently lives in Jacksonville, Florida and spends much of his time fishing on the coastal waters, gator hunting, building bows, and keeping his self reliance skills sharp. He also put up fierce competition in Discovery Channel’s Bushcraft Build-off and truly has a great love for teaching people of all ages the skills they need to survive!

You’ve seen Matt compete on Discovery Channel’s Bushcraft Build-off, but his love of survival started as young kid growing up in a Cherokee community where the old ways of hunting, fishing and bushcraft of the Native American culture are still cherished.

Today, he owns Integrated Survival Systems and pursues his passion of teaching others life-saving survival techniques. Matt continues to raise the bar, training in wilderness skills both domestically and internationally. He holds a patent for a mission adaptable holster currently used by Tier One operators and has designed a knife with Dozier knives specific to survival training.

His survival experience is matched by his tactical experience; serving as an Army Engineer in Fallujah, Matt encountered heavy combat. He then went on to serve with the Oklahoma Military Dept, Employment Security Commission and the Executive Branch of the US Govt.

Today, Matt uses his wilderness and tactical experience to provide to civilian, military, and organizational training domestically and internationally. He lives in Arkansas, where he runs Integrated Survival Systems.
